The Backun Alpha Low C Bass Clarinet puts the full bass clarinet range into a package that students and working players can actually carry. The lightweight proprietary synthetic body is paired with a hand-finished brass neck and bell that provide a warm, projecting tone with a clear core. The instrument uses the same acoustical design and key mechanism found on Backun’s professional Q Series bass clarinet, giving players Q Series intonation and response at a significantly lower price.
The synthetic body will never crack from temperature or humidity changes, making the Alpha equally reliable in rehearsal halls, outdoor venues, pit orchestras, and classrooms. Sculpted undercut tone holes with overcut vented wings on the lower joint improve response and tuning consistency across registers. A triple register mechanism keeps the instrument stable from the lowest notes through the upper register.
The Alpha’s keywork is hardened and triple-strike plated in nickel. The mechanism includes an articulated G# and a low C action with ergonomic balanced design for comfortable reach. An adjustable thumb rest and sitting floor peg allow players to find a secure, fatigue-free position during long rehearsals and performances. The instrument ships with a Backun Protégé bass clarinet mouthpiece, ligature, and cap, along with a lightweight ballistic nylon backpack case.
Alcides Rodriguez, a clarinetist in the Atlanta Symphony, meticulously adjusts each Alpha bass clarinet before it ships. This includes evaluating key action, verifying pad seating, and calibrating the mechanism so the instrument responds evenly and feels comfortable from the first playing session.
Most low C bass clarinets cost well above $10,000 and weigh considerably more. The Alpha delivers extended range, stable tuning, and durable construction for players who need a bass clarinet they can depend on without the investment or maintenance demands of a wooden instrument. Advancing students, woodwind doublers who need a reliable bass for studio or pit work, and adult players returning to the instrument all find the Alpha a practical and musically satisfying choice. This is also the perfect bass clarinet for middle school and some high school bands.
