The Backun Alpha Plus is a grenadilla wood Bb clarinet built for advancing students moving up from a plastic beginner instrument. The unstained African blackwood body, integrated wooden tone holes, and Backun-designed barrel and bell produce a dark, focused tone with good projection for ensemble playing. Players stepping up from a resin or ABS student model will hear the difference immediately.
Backun equips the Alpha Plus with custom black leather pads (uncommon at this price tier) and drop-forged keywork. The nickel-plated key configuration delivers the same acoustic performance as the silver-key variant at a lower price point. Nickel plating is also more resistant to tarnishing, which makes daily maintenance simpler for younger players. The instrument is fully compatible with Backun’s aftermarket barrels, giving players room to refine their sound as they develop.
Alcides Rodriguez, a clarinetist in the Atlanta Symphony, meticulously adjusts each Alpha Plus before it ships. This includes evaluating key action, verifying pad seating, and calibrating spring tensions so the instrument responds evenly and feels comfortable from the first playing session. The Alpha Plus leaves RMS playing at its full potential, with no break-in surprises or mechanical inconsistencies for the student to work around.
The Alpha Plus sits in the student-to-intermediate tier. It’s an ideal first wood clarinet for high school players whose sound has outgrown a plastic instrument, middle school students in advanced programs, and adult beginners or returners who want quality without a professional-level price tag.
The tone is dark and focused, which means a student on an Alpha Plus blends well alongside peers playing more expensive instruments in band and orchestra settings. The response is forgiving enough to encourage good air support habits while still rewarding players who bring more advanced technique. For many students, this is the clarinet that carries them through high school.
