The Backun Q Series Low C Bass Clarinet is a professional wooden bass clarinet designed by Morrie Backun, who played bass clarinet professionally with the CBC Radio and Vancouver Opera Orchestras before founding Backun Musical Services. That firsthand performing experience shows in every design decision: the Q Series bass was engineered from the ground up for the intonation, response, and tonal consistency that professional bass clarinetists demand.
The grenadilla body produces a warm, resonant core that projects cleanly in orchestral halls, wind band settings, and pit orchestras. Sculpted undercut tone holes with overcut vented wings on the lower joint optimize airflow for even response across registers. A triple register/Bb mechanism provides stable, accurate tuning through the upper register, eliminating the intonation compromises common in many bass clarinets. Throat tones stay reliable, register transitions are smooth, and the low C speaks with authority and a centered feel.
The Q Series bass features a silver neck and bell, triple-strike plated keywork, and a carbon fiber joint ring. The mechanism includes an articulated G#, a low C action with ergonomic balanced design, advanced adjustment screws, and an adjustable thumb rest with neck strap loop. An adjustable floor peg provides stable positioning during performance. Custom black leather pads are fitted throughout for consistent response and durability.
The instrument ships with a large swab with dual pull tabs, a floor peg, and a custom compact Marcus Bonna case with integrated bass clarinet stand straps. Mouthpiece is not included.
Alcides Rodriguez, a clarinetist in the Atlanta Symphony, meticulously adjusts each Q Series bass clarinet before it ships. This includes evaluating key action, verifying pad seating, and calibrating the mechanism so the instrument responds evenly and feels comfortable from the first playing session.
The Q Series Low C is built for professional bass clarinetists, graduate students preparing for auditions, university programs, and serious advancing students who need a wooden low C instrument with professional-level intonation and response. It offers a genuine alternative to the Buffet Tosca and Prestige bass clarinets at a lower price point, with intonation consistency that players and reviewers frequently cite as Backun’s strongest selling point.
Players moving up from a student or intermediate bass clarinet (including the Backun Alpha) will find the Q Series a significant step forward in tonal richness, dynamic range, and mechanical refinement.
