The Buffet Crampon Légende sits at the top of the cylindrical bore family that began with the Tradition. The bore draws on vintage 1950s and 60s designs, producing a tone that is dark, rich, and warm with a complex, carrying core. It sits within the same tonal family as the Tradition but with more low register presence and a slightly more focused character.
The A clarinet’s longer tube adds another layer of warmth and depth to the Légende’s already rich voice. In orchestral and chamber repertoire written for A clarinet, where lyrical playing, tonal beauty, and the ability to blend within a section are paramount, the Légende A excels.
The Légende incorporates GreenLine tone hole inserts: composite material set into the tone hole chimneys that creates a more consistent seal between pad and chimney and also add crack resistance at the tone holes.
The keywork features a distinctive rose-gold and silver finish. Metal-capped tenons, a low F correction key, and ergonomic rings are all standard. The overall build reflects Buffet’s highest tier of craftsmanship and materials selection.
Every Legende that Rodriguez Musical Services sells has been hand-selected by our performing clarinetists. We play-test numerous factory instruments to identify the clarinets with a rich, resonant tone, a sweet core (one that ‘sings’), evenness of scale and resistance, a sound that exhibits a large spectrum of colors, and the most consistent intonation.
Each selected Legende then goes through the RMS 9-Hour Optimization. The instrument is completely disassembled, and every pad, bumper, and cork is removed until only grenadilla wood and metal remain. Custom leather pads replace the factory originals. Springs are adjusted, key heights are calibrated, and the entire mechanism is regulated so that the action feels effortless and the response is even across every register and dynamic level.
The result is what we call “performance ready”: smooth key action, rich and resonant tone, and consistent response from the bottom of the chalumeau through the top of the altissimo.
The Légende A is for serious professionals and advanced students who prioritize unparalleled resonance, exceptional blend, and the richest possible tonal palette.
Players exploring the cylindrical bore family often start with the Tradition before moving to the Légende. Those who already know they want the most harmonically rich sound in Buffet’s soprano lineup will find the Légende delivers exactly that. Pairing it with the Légende Bb gives players a matched set with consistent tonal character across both instruments.
