The Buffet Crampon Tosca A Clarinet is built on the R13 bore with one critical modification: the bottom joint bore is narrower than the standard R13. This produces a tighter core, greater stability in the clarion and altissimo registers, and more focus throughout the instrument’s range. The tone is velvety, round, and controlled, with more depth in the low register than the standard R13 A. The overall character is dark and centered, well balanced between warmth and projection.
The A clarinet’s naturally darker, warmer quality pairs exceptionally well with the Tosca’s focused character. In the lyrical A clarinet repertoire (Mozart, Brahms, Strauss, and the broader orchestral canon), the Tosca A gives players a sound that carries with presence and control while retaining the beauty and color that this music demands.
The Tosca features metal-capped tenons, a low F correction key, and a raised C#/G# tone hole that improves clarity and reduces moisture accumulation. Silver-plated keywork is standard. First released in 2004, the Tosca quickly became one of Buffet’s most popular professional models.
Every Tosca A that Rodriguez Musical Services sells has been hand-selected by our performing clarinetists. We play-test numerous factory instruments to identify the clarinets with a rich, resonant tone, a sweet core (one that ‘sings’), evenness of scale and resistance, a sound that exhibits a large spectrum of colors, and the most consistent intonation.
Each selected Tosca A then goes through the RMS 9-Hour Optimization. The instrument is completely disassembled, and every pad, bumper, and cork is removed until only grenadilla wood and metal remain. Custom leather pads replace the factory originals. Springs are adjusted, key heights are calibrated, and the entire mechanism is regulated so that the action feels effortless and the response is even across every register and dynamic level.
The result is what we call “performance ready”: smooth key action, rich and resonant tone, and consistent response from the bottom of the chalumeau through the top of the altissimo.
Advanced professionals, orchestral principals, university professors, and conservatory students preparing for auditions gravitate toward the Tosca A for its focused projection and tonal control. Players who want their sound to stay centered and stable under pressure, particularly in exposed orchestral passages and solo repertoire, will find the Tosca delivers exactly that.
